MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

This is Bay State Skating School's 39th year offering ice skating classes throughout Greater Boston.

Our program focuses on recreational ice skating. Learn to skate or improve your skills! Each class consists of a 25 minute lesson and a 25 minute practice. Students are grouped according to age and ability. There are separate instructors for children and adults. Students can learn on either figure or hockey skates. Come skate and feel great!

HOW TO LACE ICE SKATES

Make sure that your skates are laced correctly. Skates that are laced well, give needed support to the skater.

First, loosen the laces so that your foot can slide easily into the boot. Pull the sock up straight, making sure there are no wrinkles. Put the toe in the boot first, and then push the heel all the way down. Pull up on the tongue of the skate. To lace up the boot, start by tightening up the laces at the toe of the boot. Work up from the toe to the ankle, making sure that each pull is snug. The laces should be tightest at the instep, where the foot and the ankle bend. This tightness gives support to the ankle and is the most important part of lacing the skates.

If using figure skates, now lace around the hooks, making a crisscross pattern with the laces. The lace at the top of the boot should be somewhat loose, so that a finger can be inserted one inch into the boot. Finish with a secure bow. A slight looseness at the top of the skate allows the student to bend their knee comfortably.

After being laced up, if the skates do not feel secure, then re-lace. Skates need to fit well. If the boot is too big, the skate will not support the student.   Hockey skates do not have hooks, but should also be laced up to the top.

If you are having trouble lacing skates, ask an instructor to show you how to lace the skates.

TIPS FOR PROPER SKATE MAINTENANCE

  1. Wipe blades dry after use
  2. Never use heat to dry skates
  3. Always use hard guards when walking off the ice surface
  4. Always use soft guard "covers" to store skates
  5. Skates need to be sharpened if dull
